Description

When did meiosis arrise? How did meiosis arrise?  From what prior function(s) did meiosis derive? How has meiosis subsequently evolved? Can meiosis be lost? What are the consequences of meiotic evolution for the maintenance of sex? I will  pose these questions and discuss how ongoing research in my laboratory is providing some answers.
