SAVING FACE

The left side of Zakia’s face is featureless pink
flesh; there is no longer an eye to return your gaze — the result of the
undiluted battery acid (“the highest quality,” Zakia says) her husband threw on
her. More than 100 disfiguring acid attacks and burnings occur every year in
Pakistan. The assailants, most often family members, generally receive little,
if any, punishment. Plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad left his prominent
London practice to return to his home country to help women like Zakia rebuild
their faces and their lives. Hear them tell their stories in this Academy
Award-winning HBO documentary.
