Faculty members in the department continue to make important contributions to the development of new statistical methodology and to provide the quantitative component to public health and biomedical research efforts that have had a major impact on the prevention and treatment of disease.
·Department of Environmental and Occupational Health I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health's website at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Environmental health is a multidisciplinary science directed towards understanding the mechanistic basis of the interaction of environmental agents and susceptibility (genetics, physiology) to these agents in modifying and/or accounting for acute and chronic human disease.
·Department of Epidemiology Epidemiology is the application of the scientific method to the study of disease in populations for the purpose of prevention or control. It is a key basic science of public health and preventive medicine. Epidemiologists (detectives) play a fundamental role in public health and preventive medicine by identifying variabilities in human situations that may have a critical influence on the occurrence of disease within populations.
·Department of Health Policy & Management The Department of Health Policy & Management, through its Health Administration Program and JD/MPH Program, which are housed in the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, is committed to providing students with an array of skills, knowledge, perspectives and tools to prepare them effectively for leadership, managerial, consulting and other knowledge-based roles in health care and public health.
·Department of Human Genetics The Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health is dedicated to genetics research, teaching, and services. This department has three major research missions:
1. To develop and use genetic methods to investigate the causes and treatment of hereditary and acquired human illness.
2. To understand and explore the impact of genetics on public health, education, and disease prevention.
3. To appreciate the role of genetic diversity within human populations.
·Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology The mission of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology is to conduct research, teaching, and service that will enhance the control of infectious diseases in the human population.
