Barbara A. Epstein, MSLS, is director of Pitt’s Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) and director of the Middle Atlantic Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM MAR). She earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by an MSLS from Case Western Reserve University, with a specialization in health sciences libraries.

Ms. Epstein began her career as a librarian at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) in Pittsburgh, rising to library director in 1985. At WPIC, she was a leader in professional activities related to mental health librarianship, serving as president of the Association of Mental Health Libraries. 

In 1995, Ms. Epstein was appointed as associate director at HSLS, and, in 2004, as director. Under her leadership, HSLS was awarded a five-year contract from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to lead the NNLM MAR in 2011. This program was extended in 2016 for another five-year cooperative agreement, which included additional funding for the NNLM Web Services Office.

Ms. Epstein is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals of the Medical Library Association and the association’s 2017–18 president. She is also active in the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, having served on the board of directors. Ms. Epstein is actively interested in professional development of health sciences librarians and has been coprincipal investigator for an NLM Planning Grant for Education and Training of Health Sciences Librarians and co-PI for a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop and offer a post-master’s degree certificate in advanced training for health sciences librarianship. 

Ms. Epstein has authored numerous articles, book chapters, and presentations.
