Trivia question: “The polio vaccine was developed by University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health researcher Jonas Salk in the building now housing the Pitt Schools of Pharmacy and Dental Medicine. It decreased global cases of polio by what percent?”

Everyone in the Pitt Health Sciences schools probably knows about Salk’s work, but how many can answer that?

It was one of the trivia questions posed to competitive teams at the Health Sciences Game Night April 9 at the Petersen Events Center. Cohosted by the Office of Strategic Communications, Health Sciences, and the Office of Health Sciences Engagement & Enrichment, the event drew approximately 200 enthusiastic students, staff and faculty members from across the six schools of the health sciences. Everyone gained a deeper knowledge of the health sciences ecosystem and its proud history.

With Abbas Hyderi, vice dean for education, School of Medicine, serving as emcee and cheerleader, the teams had a chance to prove their knowledge about the health sciences in a festive environment. The winning team, the Stealth Highness, was a group that had just met at the event.

While several questions were tough, they didn’t debate about their answers but worked together smoothly, “like a school of fish,” said Alaina Cauchie, a standardized patient for the School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education who was part of the team.

Other members of the winning team were Chanita Russell, Johnae Walker, Sade Tukuru and Luisa Fernandez, all of the School of Public Health, and Stephanie Masotti and Martha Miskanic from the School of Medicine.

In addition to trivia, guests also played a range of table games, like Spades, Uno and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Operation boards were also available.

Oh, and that polio question? 99%.
