The University of Pittsburgh is reimagining its approach to clinical research.
In January 2025, the new Clinical Trials Office (CTO) launched, becoming the “front door” for clinical research at Pitt. The new office streamlines processes that previously had been spread across different offices, departments and pathways at Pitt and UPMC, its clinical partner.
“The purpose is to help our investigators, our clinicians and clinical researchers conduct more clinical trials and conduct them more effectively and efficiently.”

“The purpose is to help our investigators, our clinicians and clinical researchers conduct more clinical trials and conduct them more effectively and efficiently,” says Anantha Shekhar, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean, School of Medicine.
Another new office, Clinical Research Operations (CRO), will work in tandem with CTO to offer operational support for studies throughout their life cycle.
Patricia Corby, Pitt Health Sciences’ associate vice chancellor for clinical trials development and operations, leads CTO, while Mark Geraci, vice chancellor for research, health sciences, leads CRO.
The effort promises to give patients in the region easier access to the very latest therapies and to further strengthen the health sciences at Pitt.
“Together, we will create an environment where our faculty and researchers thrive and, ultimately, patients benefit,” says Shekhar.
