Each January, Pitt’s School of Dental Medicine gathers to celebrate D4 Day, a milestone event marking the transition of fourth-year dental students into their professional careers. Unlike traditional residency match days at medical and other dental schools, Pitt Dental Medicine’s D4 Day serves as a comprehensive celebration of all career pathways—whether students are matching into advanced dental residency programs or stepping directly into private practice.

The Class of 2026 had plenty to celebrate. Of the 84 students in the class, 38 are pursuing advanced dental education residency programs, including specialties such as general practice residency, dental anesthesiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, and pediatric dentistry. In addition, 32 graduates are entering private practice, two are pursuing military careers and others are exploring paths such as working at federally qualified health centers.

Held in the Salk Pavilion Atrium, the event was a moment of recognition and camaraderie, bringing together students, faculty and staff to honor the achievements of the graduating class. The celebration featured music, a student-curated slideshow and time for attendees to mingle. Students marked the occasion with cake, photos using “Excited That I Matched” and “My Future Plans Are” signs and Pitt Dental Medicine hats commemorating their accomplishments.

Cassia Clayton, a D4 student, matched into the Yale-New Haven Hospital General Practice Residency program in Connecticut. “This match result excited me. It gives me hope that I will embark on the journey to becoming the best general dentist I can be,” she said. Clayton credits Pitt Dental Medicine for preparing her through diverse clinical rotations and exposure to specialized care, including experiences at the Center for Patients with Special Needs.

D4 Day is more than a celebration—it reflects the breadth of opportunities available to Pitt Dental Medicine students and the strong foundation they receive during their training. As members of the Class of 2026 embark on their careers, they carry forward not only technical expertise but also the sense of community and support that defines their experience at Pitt.
