In the latest rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, on June 16, 2026, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine had several programs ranked in the top 25 in the world. The top-ranked category, surgery, was No. 7 globally, the same as last year. It has been ranked in the top 10 for the last six years on this list, which represents the best global universities.
“This long-term success is a testament to our culture of innovation, strong institutional commitment to excellence and our faculty’s dedication to improving the outcomes of the diseases we treat,” said Timothy R. Billiar, Distinguished Professor and George Vance Foster Professor and chair, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine.
Also ranking highly were clinical medicine, at No. 19; immunology at No. 22 and infectious diseases, at No. 23. Pitt ranked at No. 25 for psychology/psychiatry (psychiatry is part of the School of Medicine while psychology is not) and for the category of neuroscience and behavior, which are areas covered by a number of departments at Pitt.
“Pitt Health Sciences has long been home to transformative research in fields critical to human health,” said Anantha Shekhar, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean, School of Medicine. “I’m enormously proud of our faculty’s ongoing contributions to improving patient outcomes on a global scale.”
In other U.S. News & World Report rankings released in April, many programs in Pitt's Health Sciences schools were ranked among the best in the country.
