Panel of Pitt Researchers to Join Dickson Prize Winner at July 11 Event

June 26, 2025

Three Pitt researchers will join Cato T. Laurencin, MD, PhD, recipient of the 2025 Dickson Prize in Medicine, for a panel discussion on July 11 when he receives the prize, the School of Medicine’s highest honor. They will discuss how their research aligns with his efforts to help patients living with musculoskeletal or limb injury or loss.

Laurencin, Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut, is the founder of the field of regenerative engineering, which seeks to regenerate complex tissue and organ systems—even limb regeneration in humans—using a transdisciplinary approach.

He will present his lecture, “Regenerative Engineering: Breakthroughs in Medicine,” on July 11, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., in person only, in the Alan Magee Scaife Hall West Wing Auditorium, room 3785. The event will also be part of Pitt Health Sciences’ Laureate Lecture series, featuring some of the world’s top-tier scientists engaged in the most significant and dynamic biomedical research currently underway.

Terence Dermody, MD, Vira I. Heinz Professor, Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, School of Medicine, will introduce the event. Anantha Shekhar, MD, PhD, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean, School of Medicine, will present the award.

The Pitt panelists are:
Chandan Sen, PhD, MS

Associate Vice Chancellor for Life Sciences Innovation and Commercialization, Health Sciences
Director, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine

Professor of Surgery, School of Medicine

He will present “Regenerative Tissue Reprogramming.”

Allison Bean, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and of Orthopaedic Surgery, School of Medicine
