April 17, 2024

A team of Pitt health sciences students received a Healthy Equity Innovation Award at the 19th annual CLARION National Interprofessional Case Competition at the University of Minnesota on April 13.

The competition included 11 teams from universities across the country with 47 students representing different health care professions. Students presented their analysis and implementation plans for how to prepare and respond effectively to a rising pandemic.

The Pitt team consisted of Paula Hayden-Vazquez (Nursing), Olivia Frey (Pharmacy), Natalie Schwarzwalder (SHRS – Emergency Medicine), and Daoud Ilayan (Social Work), from left in photo. They collaborated to prepare and present a solution to a complex public health case involving the needs of health care professionals, patients and families in Long Term Care Facilities, when faced with a new and emerging pandemic. Joe Suyama, professor and vice chair for career development in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and advisory dean in the School of Medicine, was the team’s faculty mentor.

Pitt’s participation was sponsored by the Working Group on Interprofessional Education, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor of the Health Sciences and the Office of Health Sciences Interdisciplinary Education.
