Amery Treble-Barna, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, School of Medicine, and of clinical and translational science, was awarded a $3 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to investigate the biological and environmental factors influencing neurobehavioral recovery from pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Treble-Barna will study the influence of DNA methylation, a mechanism that dynamically changes gene activity, in response to internal and external factors associated with TBI recovery in children between ages of 3 and 18. She hopes to reveal biologic signatures that signal the risk for poor recovery and identify potential biomarkers that could revolutionize TBI management in children. Treble-Barna is also the director of the program Mothers Leading Science, supporting health sciences researchers who are mothers of young children.
